Above is an “energy map” provided by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which shows the intensity of the tsunami caused by the earthquake which struck Japan.

Note how close Indonesia is to Japan, especially compared to the U.S. The Pacific east of Japan is enormous!
