QS Rankings 2018: A briefer commentary this time

The QS World University Rankings were published earlier this week. Maynooth has two subjects in the top 200 worldwide: English and Geography (both in the range 151-200). I have explained in an earlier blog how difficult it is for subjects at smaller and newer universities to receive recognition in this listings so this is a significant achievement.

Here are the Geography departments ranked in Ireland

2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
Maynooth 101-150 101-150 151-200 151-200 151-200
NUIG 151-200 151-200 151-200
QUB 51-100 101-150 101-150 151-200 151-200
TCD 51-100 51-100 101-150 101-150 101-150
UCD 101-150 51-100 101-150 51-100 51-100

Here are the components of the Geography score (Galway does not give components for Geography so I am unsure how their Geography ranking was achieved – perhaps they returned under Marine or Environmental Studies?)

2018 Academic Reputation Employer Reputation H-Index Citations Citations per paper
Maynooth 62.0% 51.1% 64.4% 75.2%
NUIG
QUB 59.2% 67.2% 64.4% 70.1%
TCD 72.9% 70.7% 67.7% 69.4%
UCD 68.7% 73.0% 66.1% 67.7%

Compared to last year one of our research indicators is up (Citations per paper) and the other is slightly down (H-Index of Citations). Our Academic Reputation is up, but our Employer Reputation is significantly down.

2017 Academic Reputation Employer Reputation H-Index Citations Citations per paper
Maynooth 57.7% 64.5% 65.9% 70.2%
NUIG 54.8% 68.5% 61.6% 63.4%
QUB 55.5% 69.7% 65.9% 70.5%
TCD 57.0% 74.4% 71.3% 70.6%
UCD 67.1% 75.4% 65.9% 66.6%
